Snow Day Fashion Shows

Update finally! We had a snow day this week on Tuesday! It snowed about 5 or 6 inches Monday night and it was beautiful. We were able to sleep in and enjoy the day off. Throughout the day we did activities with all the dorm students. Before lunch the girls decided to have a fashion show. They dressed up, curled their hair, put on make-up, had music, a runway, a curtain made from sheets, and even lights! I took pictures and was the "press". They were so funny and looked great! It was so much fun for them :) Then we watched movies, read books, played musical chairs and tons of other things we could think of. It was a good day for getting to know some more of the dorm kids, especially the older girls and the boys. The little girls are very used to us and constantly want our attention. On the snow day we were able to talk with more of the older kids and the boys.
Last night (Wednesday) we took some of our own books over the little girls dorm and read to them before bed. Then they started reading the books and wanting to be the reader. Pretty soon we had about 12 girls with their noses stuck in the books not wanting to go to bed. They loved it! Instead of watching the television they were enjoying books and reading to me, it made me melt :) I just wish they had more new books to enjoy, instead of old ones from the 1960's or 70's that are torn and they have a hard time relating with. That is a major problem, the lack of resources! But we are trying as many things as we can.
Today is Thursday and we are having our Valentine parties today. Lots of kids brought in treats and other things for the class. We will left them watch a movie and enjoy some free time. They have been working hard! I have really enjoyed reading their morning journals that my teacher let me start. Today the writing prompt was If the world was made of candy....One of my higher level students wrote If the world was made of candy the people would lick all the stores. Haha! It made me laugh so hard, they are so creative! Then one boy said he would eat the world and drew a picture of himself eating the planet. I am getting attached to my students and the dorm childre more and more. It's hard not to let the emotional things get to you, but starts to get at you over time.
